‌The next Legislative Assembly election in Tripura is scheduled to be held in or before February 2023 to elect all 60 members of the state's Legislative Assembly.

‌In local body elections held on 6 April 2021 and 25 November 2021 at 20 Municipal Bodies, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won all the seats except one won by Tipraha Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance (TIPRA).

‌Due to the victory of the BJP in the civic polls, the state witnessed clashes.

‌Several Trinamool Congress(TMC) leaders were taken into custody by police for reasons ranging from Covid protocol violations to breach of peace.

Notable among them was TMC youth wing leader Saayoni Ghosh, who was indicted with an attempt to murder and promote enmity.

‌A chain of incidents of violence rocked Tripura during the campaign, compelling the Supreme Court to intervene.

‌ Taking cognisance of a petition that pursued protection for TMC members, the Supreme Court directed the Tripura government to ensure that political parties are not prevented from peacefully conducting programmes.

‌Chief Minister Biplab Deb made controversy when he said government officials need not worry about contempt of court cases as he controlled the police and it wasn't easy to send someone to jail.

He later asserted that statement was twisted out of context.

‌There also has been the demand for separate statehood for tribal people for which even the rival parties joined their hands.

‌Pressing for a separate state for Tripura tribals for the sake of their “survival and interests”, they even held a sit-in demonstration at Jantar Mantar in the national capital.

‌As many as 14 attacks on media and journalists in Tripura were reported in 2021, including the arrest of two Delhi-based journalists on sedition charges.

‌Reports from the Centre for Study of Society and Secularism states that after the attack on Durga puja mandaps in Bangladesh, which shares borders with Tripura on three sides, Hindu nationalist groups began to deliberately fan communal tensions.

‌Meanwhile, Nirmala Sitaraman inaugurated 11 projects in Tripura for which she made a promise of 1300 crore.

‌The government also declared free education and other assistance for children who lost their parents to the Covid 19.
