All politicians are "like minded". All they care about is power.
In my opinion he will be eating up the vote share of SAD which should go to the advantage of Congress party. AAP had started it's consolidation on weaker sections which has been taken care of by Congress Party by nominating Mr Channi as CM of Punjab. By all these dynamics, perceptionaly Congress Party seems to be in a better position than earlier when Capt. Amrinder Singh was in chair.
Former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Tuesday announced that he will form his own political and join hands with BJP and two breakaway factions of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) -- Akali Dal (Taksal)-led by Ranjit Singh Brahmpura and Akali Dal (Democratic)-led by Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa -- for the upcoming assembly elections in the state.
After remaining in the Congress for the past 23 years, he has now called BJP a like-minded party.
Out of these 23 years, he served as Punjab Chief Minister for nine-and-a-half years in two terms from 2002 to 2007 and 2017 to September 2018 and state unit chief for nearly eight years on three occasions from 1999 to 2002, 2010 to 2013 and 2015 to 2017.
He was brought into the Congress by his school friend and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1980 and soon after got elected to the Lok Sabha.
However, he resigned from the Congress in 1984 in protest against the Operation Bluestar and joined the Akali Dal.
Captain Amarinder Singh was elected to the Punjab assembly from Talwandi Sabo and became a minister for Agriculture, Forest, Development and Panchayats.
However, he later broke away from the Akali Dal in 1992 and formed a breakaway faction known as Shiromani Akali Dal (Panthic).
He merged his party with the Congress in 1998 after it was humiliated in the 1997 assembly elections and even himself suffered a crushing defeat from Patiala.
But before that, he had approached Akali Dal leaders Parkash Singh Badal and Gurcharan Singh Tohra for a ticket but was denied.
A hurt Captain Amarinder Singh had then vowed to become the Chief Minister one day.
His dream was fulfilled and in 2002 when Congress won the elections and named him the Chief Minister.
Now that he has again jumped the ship and announced an alliance with BJP, Captain Amarinder Singh faces a daunting task of making a mark in upcoming assembly elections given that saffron party is facing a massive backlash from farmers in the wake of three new farm laws.
So, will his new party meet the same fate that his previous party met in 1997.
