The Russian and Chinese lack of involvement is definitely concerning
Are the world's countries "careening towards climate catastrophe" as the Secretary-General of United Nations António Guterres alleges? That is a question that may not be answered even in the Glasgow summit on climate change.
"Even if recent pledges were clear and credible, and there are serious questions about some of them, we are still careening towards climate catastrophe", Guterres said talking to journalists.
Guterres wants "more ambition and more action." He also rang alarm bells. "We see dangerous levels of mistrust among the big powers," he said, adding that the big powers were an obstacle to the "massive mobilisation of political will" to deal with the issues of climate change. Looking at the disagreements, non-participation of Chinese and Russian leaders in person at the summit has clearly raised question marks on the seriousness with which some of the countries are dealing with the issue of climate change and the future. It has been emphasised that the most crucial objective of the COP26 mist be to re-establish trust. Guterres that it must be ": rooted in injustices, inequalities and geopolitical divides." Guterres is not convinced about the governments' current commitment. He has said that governments' current, formal commitments "condemn the world to a calamitous 2.7 (Celsius) degree increase" in global temperatures.
According to Guterres and many Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change scientists, the ideal temperature warming should be 1.5°C. He has said it is the "only liveable future for humanity."
