Arguably the most powerful drug lord ever, Pablo Escobar, feared one thing when he was alive—getting extradited to the U.S. from Columbia, his country. In fact, when a law was being enacted that allowed for the extradition of drug lords facing international charges to the U.S., Escobar went berserk, indulging in bomb blasts in his country, leading to many deaths. Drug lords in South America dread getting extradited to the United States.
According to the Colombian government, Colombia’s most-wanted drug lord, Dairo Antonio Úsuga, also known as, Otoniel, who armed forces have captured, will be extradited to the U.S.. Colombian President Iván Duque compared Otoniel’s arrest Saturday to the gunning down of Pablo Escobar in the early 90s. “Otoniel was the most feared drug trafficker in the world, killer of police, of soldiers, of social leaders, and recruiter of children,” Duque said during a broadcast video message. “This blow is only comparable to the fall of Pablo Escobar in the 1990s.” (https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2021/10/24/colombia-otoniel-drug-cartel-arrested/)
The U.S. government had put up a reward of $5 million for help locating him.
Otoniel has been indicted in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Florida under various charges including cocaine distribution and murder. He is likely to end in a U.S. prison for decades on various charges. South, and Central American governments fear holding drug lords in prisons in their countries as they often lead to reprisals, prison breaks and other incidents. The last major drug lord extradited to the U.S. was Joaquín Guzmán, also known as El Chapo, who twice escaped from high security Mexican prisons. He is now in a U.S. jail with no chances of being released in his lifetime. (https://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-38686379)
The Colombian government could file the petition in the Supreme Court to extradite Otoniel to the U.S as early as this week and he could be in the foreign country within a month. (https://www.dailysabah.com/world/americas/colombia-to-extradite-drug-lord-otoniel-to-us)
