The WHO naming convention uses Greek alphabets to identify new covid variants.
So the latest one, which originated in South Africa, is named Omicron.
But there's a twist: WHO skipped two letters that come before Omicorn: nu and xi. (The last variant was called mu.)
Nu was avoided because it sounded like "new" and could potentially cause panic.
Xi was avoided because it is also the name of the Chinese premier.
WHO is now facing derision for skipping Xi, with many critics including US politicians slamming it for kowtowing to China.
Social media users are also making fun of the decision. "Technically, they are all Xi variants," said one comment.
