A little over one billion people, or, over 70 percent of the Chinese population are Internet users, according to the latest data released by China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC). The latest tally showed a growth of 21.75 million compared to the number of internet users last December. And it has grown by 100 million since last year around this time. Chinese internet users are used to heavily censored platforms with access to only those sites and apps that the Chinese Communist Party has approved. And they also don't have the freedom to post anything they want on social media, which again is heavily regulated. But that has made no difference to the growth in numbers. But not all Chinese are coming to the Internet searching for information about the world and beyond. For instance, it is mostly what the state wants them to read and watch if they want the latest news from China or the world. So what is this enormous number of people doing on the Internet?
The Chinese are doing a variety of things according to the latest data. For instance, there are 812 million Chinese shopping online, 469 million people ordering food, and 325 million are using the Internet for online education. 325 million people are also using the Internet for playing online games. There are another 239 million people who are using the Internet for healthcare services. [https://www.shine.cn/biz/tech/2108274169/]
The number of rural netizens stands at 297 million, opening another opportunity to China's online tech companies to tap into the market. The enormity of one billion netizens could be gauged by multinationals and others who want to tap into the massive Chinese online market.
Because of this vast population, the Chinese government has been on an overdrive to control this space and impose restrictions on data collection and privacy-related matters.
