A student who helped design the study revealed that the purpose was to see if one can change metabolism during a fast with workouts – more so to understand how quickly the body enters ketosis and makes ketones.
•Fasting is gaining momentum as an effective way to shed kilos and boost metabolic health.
•If a person has a huge meal before fasting or fills up on carbohydrates, one may not reach ketosis for multiple days.
At a time when weight loss is a prime goal for many, people are turning to various dietary and workout regimens that promise quick results in a short period of time. From following various diet fads to adhering to workout regimes – people do it all to lose weight faster – be it periodic fasting or time-restricted fasting like intermittent fasting. Amidst this, fasting is gaining momentum as an effective way to shed kilos and boost metabolic health. And according to a recent study published in the journal of Medicine & Science in Sport & Exercise by Brigham Young University, intense workouts before fasting can help maximise the benefits.
For the study, 20 healthy adults were asked to fast for 36 hours while staying hydrated. The fast started with a standardised meal – the first one without exercising and the other one with an intense treadmill workout. This was followed by hunger, mood assessments, and regularly checking ketone levels. And the results proved that exercise made a huge difference – participants reached ketosis three and a half hours sooner in the fast and release 43 per cent more ketones. However, without exercise, participants hit ketosis 20-24 hours into the fast.
Alternatively, if a person has a huge meal before fasting or fills up on carbohydrates, one may not reach ketosis for multiple days. Therefore, even while working out, it is important to eat moderately before fasting.
