Part 4 of my conversation with Mr. Shailesh Gandhi about his life before and after RTI
There was an organisation that was very prominent at that time- National Campaign for People’s Right to Information (NCPRI). I was selected as the convener for this. They had promised in their manifesto that they would bring Right to Information, Right to Education, Right to Food and so on.
Also, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi formed the National Advisory Council to advise NCPRI and to see that the manifesto is followed. One of the people selected for this was Aruna Roy whom I previously mentioned.
First thing that was picked by the council to pursue was Right to Information. We got the chance, as NCPRI members to discuss with the bureaucrats the draft of the law. Therefore, in a manner, I was the part of the drafting committee of NCPRI. There were almost 30-40 people involved in this.
The core team of 4-5 members including Prashant Bhushan in Delhi would negotiate with the government and hold meetings. The rest of us were informed about the proceedings and we gave our suggestions. Everything was an open ended discussion.
Subsequently, we got, what I believe, is one of the best laws in the world. I continued to evangelise it and I still hold the firm belief that it is a great tool.
To be continued…
