RagiGupta: What steps can people take to make abortions safe and accessible during pandemic?
Dr Sharmila Majumdar: The safest and easiest way to ensure abortion care during pandemic is through telehealth (use of digital information and communication technologies) consultation.
The earlier in pregnancy an abortion takes place, the safer it is for the woman's health and the less complicated for the provider.
In countries where safe abortions are the norm, more than 90% of women have abortions in the first trimester of pregnancy.
But make sure that you approach only a registered practitioner. Because unsafe abortions can lead to long-term complications, damage to reproductive organs, lead to pelvic inflammatory disease and even secondary infertility (inability to conceive again after successfully becoming pregnant once).
According to the World Health Organisation, around 25 per cent of all pregnancies worldwide end in induced abortions, approximately 50 million each year. Of these, 20 million are performed under dangerous conditions, either by untrained providers or using unsafe procedures, or both.
