People in Virginia have given President Joe Biden and the Democratic Party a huge thumbs down. With the 2022 mid-term elections looming large, President Biden's popularity dropping by ten points in opinion polls, it's a hard climb for the Democrats who are hoping to hold on to the seats they have in Congress.
The victory for the Republicans in Virginia would be hard to swallow for Biden as he had won the state during the presidential elections by ten points. The Republican spirits are up, and they can now hope to topple more Democratic seats in the midterm elections next year. Biden speaking to reporters after the results came in, said that people were upset about several things, including Covid to children going to school to jobs to the cost of gasoline. He went on to say that his legislative plan and spending would "ameliorate" many of the problems quickly. (https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-59159008)
Biden's failure to implement his massive infrastructure program due to months of infighting in Congress and also within his party has not helped matters. Critics point out months of infighting on Capitol Hill has stalled two of Biden's massive bills, and he may have to move on them very quickly and win back support of the people
But that is easier said than done. According to observers, the way Republican candidate Glenn Youngkin ran his campaign making it local as much as possible and not asking Donald Trump to campaign, fearing a backlash from educated women, could be seen a playbook by the Republicans in many states for the 2022 midterms. On the other hand, Democrats should realise the nationalising every election and invoking Donald Trump may not yield the results they are looking for.
With public opinion surveys saying that Americans are frustrated with the pandemic, rising prices and Biden's chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan, things are not going well for him. He has a hard climb ahead.
