There will be plenty of matches at the World Cup that will garner plenty of attention. Repeats of some dramatic games, and rivalries renewed. With that in mind, here are three games that might receive less headlines than they deserve:
France vs Denmark
Defending champions face dark horses in what should be a cracking match in Group D.
These two are no strangers to one another, having already faced each other twice this year. Both games took place in the Nations League and both went in the favour of Kasper Hjulmand’s men. In fact, historically, it is the Danes that hold the overall head-to-head four to three (with one draw) in competitive matches.
It is very likely that this match will determine the winner of this group, so it will be up to Les Bleus to learn their lesson quickly and avoid a third defeat to Denmark in 2022.
England vs United States
This is going to be an interesting one. Group B will pit together England and the US as two world powers square off. The Americans have defeated England in a FIFA World Cup before, Joe Gaetjens scoring the lone goal some 62 years ago in Belo Horizonte.
They met even more recently, back in 2010 which ended 1-1. The US topped that group ahead of the English on goals scored. One thing history has taught us between these two?
England can seldom rest on their laurels against the United States as they have never defeated the Stars and Stripes in a competitive fixture.
Portugal vs Uruguay
Two great footballing countries will meet at the Lusail Iconic Stadium to end the second round of group play. I am sure Portuguese fans will seldom need to be reminded what happened in their last World Cup game. A pair of Edinson Cavani goals did the trick as Uruguay topped Portugal four years ago in the round of 16.
While some may argue this will be the biggest game in Group H, I do beg to differ.
Look out for my top five matches of the group stage to find out why.
