Arsenal's visit to Old Trafford in early September was their only defeat in the Premier League this season. Since then, they embarked on a fourteen game unbeaten run that included only one draw and thirteen wins. This spectacular run saw them create a comfortable cushion over Manchester City in second place, who have succumbed to the odd defeats and draws this season. Even after a surprise defest to Sean Dyche's Burnley on Saturday, the Gunners sit on 50 points, comfortably clear of City on 45. Manchester City could go within two points of the league leaders with a win over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday albeit having played a game more. Defeat would leave Arsenal five points clear with a game in hand.
The title race is particularly interesting because even though both teams have played 20 fixtures, they are yet to play each other. Two 'six-pointer' fixtures are yet to come and would probably be extremely consequential in terms of who will be top by the end of May. Arsenal may not have been expected to mount a title challenge this season but their performances certainly justify their place in the table. Manchester City's competitiveness over the past years under Pep Guardiola means that they can never truly be written off in the Premier League. City enthusiasts may describe this season as one of their worse campaigns under the Spaniard, but it is telling that even in that season there would be no surprise in them winning the Premier League.
