Sometimes when I pick up one of my old books and the first thing I do is take deep sniff to soak up that tantalizing special smell and then proceed to admire the yellowing pages. Now with technology, you can read books online. While many people thought electronic media would replace books, they have been proved wrong by readers. Because the screens could never give us that smell, that feel and memories. It is not marked by tears at that particularly sad part, nor does it contain the small flowers pressed between the pages or the yellowish tint signifying your journey together.
But what most readers stressed on was that they missed the smell of old books. It is because as books age, the compounds used to hold it together – the glue, the pages, the ink start breaking down releasing volatile compounds which are the source of the smell. Especially Lignin, a plant resin which is very close
to Vanillin. It breaks down to give old books that slightly Vanilla scent.
