As an Argentina fan, this picture haunts me
Who can forget Mario Gotze’s extra-time winner against Argentina that helped Germany lift the 2014 World Cup? But that was the highest point in the former world cup winners' career. Since then, the German's career never saw the sun again in the shadow of this moment.
Blessed with speed and superb technique, Gotze was the brightest star coming out of Germany. At 17, the German started his career at Dortmund and was an integral part of Klopp's excellent Dortmund squad. By 19, the former World Cup winner had already won two Bundesliga, and mesmerized the whole of Europe with his excellentperformances. The following season all the superhouse in Europe wanted Mario, but the German superstar went on to join Pep Guardiola's Bayern team.
In his first season at Bayern, Gotze was brilliant. The German Messi scored 10 goals in his 27 appearances for Bayern. In his second season, things started falling apart for the German. Gotze went from being a regular starter to Guardiola’s go-to substitute. The German's average performances also left the Bayern hierarchy unimpressed.
In 2016, Gotze returned to Dortmund after failing to make it at Bayern. But the prodigal son was unwanted by his new boss, Thomas Tuchel. Though there were moments of joy for Gotze, they were only a few in the yellow and black. Gotze was more of a bench warmer than a starter at Dortmund. In 2017, Gotze was diagnosed with a rare metabolic illness that caused fatigue and weight gain. The German faced heavy criticism for being overweight, and was also left out of the 2018 Germany world cup squad.
Fast Forward to 2020, Gotze had to leave the Dortmund family, and it took him three months to find a new club. The 28-year-old had to join PSV to reignite his career.
