He is remembered every November 14th as the Chacha of Children even in Goa. Lost in the annual celebrations here by his own partymen is the fact that the state has a more important reason to pay homage and say a thank you.
It was PM Jawaharlal Nehru who liberated Goa from a four and half century old Portuguese Rule and united it with rest of India. Yessir, Goa always had a special connection with Goa which no rewriting of history in contemporary times can take away.
For those in Goa who want the state to be given a special status, Nehru is best remembered for admitting Goa's uniqueness “I have felt for a long time that Goa had a distinctive personality, and it would be a pity if anything were done to take away that personality. It may be that gradually time and other factors will bring about changes, but it is not for the government to enforce changes that will affect Goa’s personality….Goa can develop as it likes within the framework of India and thus add to the richness of India.”
But then the legendary visionary looked at Goa beyond its beaches, beauty and legacy when he said, “It would be wrong to divert your energy to anything but the task of building up Goa, building up India and thus bequeath a great heritage.”
So when P.Chidambaram, senior AICC election observer to Goa recently publicly admitted that “There is no doubt about it. We won Goa election in 2007, we won Parliament election 2009. In 2012 we lost the Goa election, in 2014 we lost the Parliament election. This time we are determined to win Goa and then win India,” - it wasn't tactical it was practical.
Lost in vicious interpretation of. Nehru's words "Ajeeb hai yeh Goa ke log" is the fact that Nehru used 'ajeeb' in its Urdu form which means Wondrous or Amazing, Astonishing, Astounding, Extraordinary, Fascinating, Marvelous, Miraculous, Striking and Wonderful. Nehru lived in times where Urdu was the language of richness and people would use it for praise and class.
The Congress in Goa, steeped in power-broking remember him as a tokenism.
