Indians still think of therapy as something that's taboo, something only needed by deviants. The act of sitting down with a professional to work out your issues is not something that ordinary people do, according to our society.
Perhaps that's why nobody discusses therapy, and why people are so reluctant to consider this as an option when struggling. But this is absurd. It's literally just looking after your mind, the same way you look after your body. Pretty much everyone can benefit from a therapy session with a (good) therapist!
We all have certain baggage, certain things that are unique to our emotional development - when we work on these things, we are better able to progress past the barriers and behaviours that keep us locked in unhealthy patterns. Do you have a coping mechanism you want to get rid of, for instance? Well, therapy is the perfect place to bring that up without the fear of judgment.
When our elders say "I didn't need therapy; I turned out fine without it," I sometimes wonder if they did, in fact, turn out fine. All you need to do is look at our repressed society, at the people who have anger issues, or who abuse more vulnerable people as an outlet for their emotions. I wish those people had gotten the therapy they so desperately needed.
