Let me first point out that Supernatural was not always a "bad" show, and that I have been an avid fan of the show for a long time, so I'm not here to hate. I'd say that Supernatural has deteriorated over time.
Seasons 2-5 were really engaging and fresh (Season 1 was good, but a bit slow). All of those seasons connected and built off one another in a way that made sense, keeping in line with the established mythos of the universe as the show slowly introduced more and more "big bads" and cool villains for Sam and Dean to face. The show also built up (or tore down) the brothers' relationship with one other in new ways to keep the Interpersonal drama interesting.
But... I mean, after your main character jumps in a portal possessed as Satan to save the world, where can a show go?
Initially, Supernatural was only intended to be 5 seasons, which is why the first 5 are so good comparably. It is understandable that the show would decline after that considering the writers had to scramble for direction, and...that's exactly what happened.
6-7 were close to what Supernatural had been before, but there was just... something missing from it (tbh, a good, compelling central arc and plot throughout the seasons). Still, I watched on, because one thing Supernatural still can pull off even now is a really fantastic or funny episode, and 6 and 7 were loaded with little gems. The plot was weaker, obviously, but the tone was consistent and back then still had hope for the show.
8,9,10,11 were a little closer in quality to what Supernatural had been before due to its interesting plot and Sam storyline, but it also marked a shift in tone and "quality" of the series.
By this point, the show had lost the luster of its initial 5 seasons. Cool and interesting episodes still happened sometimes, but it just felt so... muted. The show had become a hollowed-out shell of what it had once been. The brother drama was getting old, the angels and demons were a joke, basically... The show was slowing down.
