Spain Manager De La Fuente Retaliates After Backlash for Gavi's Injury!
Spain national team manager Luis De La Fuente has come under heavy criticism after Gavi suffered a long-term knee injury in Spain's 3-1 victory over Georgia. The 2010 World Cup winners had already qualified for the 2024 Euros, hence this game was a dead rubber.
Barcelona are reportedly furious with De La Fuente after the events of the game. However, the Spain boss has washed off his hands claiming the injury could even have happened in a LaLiga game or during training.
Talking to the media about Gavi's injury, De La Fuente said, "I understand Barca's complaints, but, if it wasn't Gavi, it could have happened to someone else. This can happen in a La Liga match, in training, or any situation."
The Spain boss concluded by saying, "Sometimes we don't realize the risk that each moment entails when you put on your boots. It was an accident, a misfortune, but Gavi was perfectly ready to play. Now I'm not even thinking about the Euros, with all due respect, not even the Olympics, only the health of the footballer."
Gavi has been ever-present for Barcelona and Spain, having started all of La Roja's qualification games. Hence De La Fuente could have given the 19-year-old some much-needed rest given the fact Pedri is already out of action due to injury.
