Punjab Congress President Navjot Singh Sidhu will continue on the post after he withdrew his resignation following a meeting with Rahul Gandhi.
"Sidhu shared his concerns with Rahul Gandhi. We have told him that his concerns will be taken care of here. He assured Rahul Gandhi that he has withdrawn his resignation and he will resume his duties as the Punjab Congress President," party general secretary in-charge of Punjab Harish Rawat said after the meeting.
Sidhu had met Congress general secretary in-charge of organisation KC Venugopal and Rawat on Thursday.
"I shared all my concerns with Rahul Gandhi. Everything has been sorted out," Sidhu said after his meeting with Rahul Gandhi.
But the big question on everybody's mind in the Punjab Congress is how long will this peace prevail in the state unit given Sidhu's mercurial behaviour.
He had frequent run-ins with former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh and now with his successor Charanjit Singh Channi too.
His resignation last month over the appointments and cabinet reshuffle by the new Chief Minister had triggered major crisis in the Punjab Congress that is yet to figure out a counter strategy to prevent any possible split by Captain Amarinder Singh who is up in arms against his party following his ouster.
His calculation that Channi will remain under his control was upset with the pro-people approach of the Chief Minister and his ever increasing popularity has surprised many.
It seems the Congress leadership has decided to form a party panel that will coordinate with the state government and the central leadership.
The move apparently will check Sidhu and be prepared for any eventuality as far as organisational matters are concerned in the run up to the elections.
There is a view in the Punjab Congress that being a maverick Sidhu might create major problems for the party at the time of ticket distribution.
A section in the state unit had in fact urged the central leadership to accept Sidhu's resignation and consider it as a "God-send opportunity".
The leaders belonging to this section had argued that his continuation on the post will hurt the party's prospects in the upcoming assembly elections.
