Every year September is celebrated as a Sexual Health Month, recognized by the American Sexual Health Association (ASHA).
According to the World Health Organization, sexual health is defined as “a state of physical, emotional, mental, & social well-being related to sexuality; it is not merely the absence of disease, dysfunction or infirmity. Sexual health requires…the possibility of having pleasurable & safe sexual experiences, free of coercion, discrimination & violence. For sexual health to be attained and maintained, the sexual health of all persons must be respected, protected & fulfilled.”
2021's theme for sexual health awareness month is 'Turn it on: Sexual Health in a digital world'. As the world has been facing the deadly COVID19 virus, this years theme has been kept according to the understanding of sexual heath during the pandemic.
The main objective behind this day is to help individuals to recognize sexual rights as a basic human rights, and it's essential for people for their well being and necessary for living a fulfilled life.
Although it's an integral part of our lives, still there has been certain stigma and taboo associated with acceptance and normalcy about our sexual health and lives.
Well, the start and acceptance about sexuality and sexual health comes from conversation. Thus this month promotes and encourages youth, adults, educators, sexual health practitioners, nonprofit organizations, and government policy-makers in an open and earnest conversation about sex, sexuality, and sexual health.
Director of the WHO Sexual and Reproductive Health and Research department, including the United Nations Special Research Programme HRP, Ian Askew said: Sexual health is not a fixed state of being, and every person’s needs will change across the life course,”.
Let's normalize and talk about sex, respect each other sexual preferences, and celebrate this month spreading awareness, and understanding sexual health, as a healthy sexual health and life is good for both mind and the body of an individual!
