It is such a shame for the restaurant to be unethical. I love sarees because they are so elegant.
Great post. Keep raising such issues!!👏
It’s sad to see how saree being a symbol of elegance in Indian culture is now seen as an inappropriate attire if you want entry in restaurants in Delhi.
Saree being the most versatile and beautiful attire is not a part of smart casuals according to the staff of a restaurant in Delhi named Aquila.
Aquila, located in Ansal Plaza, Khel Gaon Marg, had denied entry to a woman in saree stating that it isn’t a ‘smart casual’.
What I don’t understand is, who decided what smart casuals are and on what basis is this list created?
Even some clubs have continued with colonial practices and don't allow guests wearing slippers, sports shoes and shorts. Isn't it time to end such practices?
I strongly believe everyone’s definition of casuals can vary widely. And hands down saree is a smart attire!
I mean are we so influenced by the western culture to openly boycott or shame our culture? Is it even ethical? Wearing a dress or a jeans with a top gives your the license to sit and eat in restaurant but not when you’ve draped a saree? What’s so wrong about it? What’s wrong in choosing our own styles?
Sarees portray India’s culture and diversity in the most elegant ways. In fact, Indian culture has completely rocked the red carpet at Cannes and every other part of the world with a saree. And I think it’s extremely important to celebrate your culture.
After the Aquila incident, activist Barkha Trehan visited a few restaurants flaunting her saree and she wasn't stopped anywhere. 'Saree is power, an identity, a language. I am unstoppable. I will be flaunting my saree everywhere," she says.
When our bollywood beauties can take over the Cannes Film Festival by flaunting their ethnicity and looking like a dream in a saree then whats the issue in wearing one and grabbing a bite at a restaurant?
