One of Italy’s renowned football club Roma have made history on Wednesday after their fans set a new attendance record in the history of Italian women's football. In Roma’s first ever UEFA Women's Champions League quarter-final qualification, the whole city was lifted up and celebrations were going on everywhere. But little did the players know they would get such a huge amount of support in this match against heavyweights Barcelona. A large number of around 39,454 fans rose to cheer at the Stadio Olimpico at Rome in order to watch and support the Serie A Women League leaders. Despite Roma losing the match 1-0 to the Spanish champions in the first leg of the tie, it overtook the previous record that was set by Juventus in their league win over Fiorentina way back in 2019. Although it was nothing compared to Barcelona’s record last year when they played Wolfsburg at the Camp Nou when a number of over 91,648 spectators came to support their team which is still the highest-ever attendance in the history of women's club football.
Barcelona were looking very confident going into the match despite they being the away team such has been their dominance in women’s football for the last few years. As the match began, Barcelona kept a lot of possession and Roma were looking very intact defensively and kept their two markswomen Valentina Giacinti and Andressa Alves always on the charge for any possibilities of counter-attacks.
Although, the chance never really fell for them as they hardly made any movement into their attacking third as Barcelona’s Caroline Graham Hansen and Salma Paralluelo continuously troubled their defense. The Italian side had a lot of trouble controlling Aitana Bonmatí and Asisat Oshoala as in the first 20 minutes itself, Barcelona had eight shots on goals to Roma's zero. It was at the half-hour mark that Barcelona finally got their goal with Paralluelo scoring her first Champions League goal with an effort from outside the box.
