Very good 👍
Have you ever heard of the global K-pop boy group name BTS or popular girl group name BlackPink? What about the Korean movie, Parasite? It is the current holder of the Academy Award for Best Picture, better known as the Oscar. Do you know why Korean pop culture is trending these days or why everyone is talking about the Hallyu Wave?
Some might wonder what is a hallyu wave? Hallyu is a Chinese word, which when translated literally means Korean wave. A Korean wave refers to the global popularity of South Korea’s culture [ which includes: pop culture, entertainment, music, tv dramas and movies.] Hence, Hallyu is a collective term used to refer to the phenomenal growth of Korean culture.
Hallyu primarily spread to China and Japan, then later to South East Asian countries and now it is a raging trend globally. Hallyu has been a boon to South Korea. Since 1999 hallyu has become one of the biggest cultural phenomena across Asia, it started with Swiri, a movie released in 1999 followed by ‘My Sassy Girl’, another popular movie in 2001 respectively.
South Korea has a dedicated goal to become the world's largest exporter of popular culture. It is a way for Korea to develop its soft power, [ soft power is the ability to attract rather than coerce, it includes; culture, political values and foreign policies.]
South Korea’s President Moon Jae-in’s in his 2021 New Year's Address
Together with democracy, the creativity and unrestrained imagination of our culture and arts have become more diverse and competitive. K-content like the film “Parasite” and works of BTS and Blackpink have fascinated people and brought joy. The government will assist creative activities for arts so that culture and arts professionals can fully demonstrate their creativity and talent. We will also more firmly solidify Korea’s status as a cultural powerhouse, for instance, by promoting the digitalisation of Hallyu-related content. [Unofficial Translation ]
