Loved the NYT lede!
The late Carmelite friar—beloved of Vatican Radio listeners as “The Latin-lover”—served as one of the Vatican’s foremost experts in the Latin language for nearly 40 years.
He died in his hometown of Milwaukee, in the US state of Wisconsin, on Christmas Day, at the age of 81
Acknowledging his years of service, Pope Francis said Fr. Reginald “demonstrated the brilliance of Latin to copious numbers of students.”
Perhaps a greater tribute to him was the way New York Times wrote his obituary.
First two paragraphs read
"Reginald Foster, a former plumber’s apprentice from Wisconsin who, in four decades as an official Latinist of the Vatican, dreamed in Latin, cursed in Latin, banked in Latin and ultimately tweeted in Latin, died on Christmas Day at a nursing home in Milwaukee. He was LXXXI.
His death was confirmed by the Vatican. He had tested positive for the coronavirus two weeks ago, The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported"
The priest was also fluent in Greek, German and Italian. He tweeted, well, in Latin. He had a whacky sense of humour, something not usually associated with a Catholic priest.
"You do not need to be mentally excellent to know Latin,” he said in an interview with UK Telegraph. “Prostitutes, beggars and pimps in Rome spoke Latin, so there must be some hope for us.”
