Renowned actor Alec Baldwin has been formally charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the on-set shooting death of Halyna Hutchins while filming the movie "Rust." According to prosecutors, the incident occurred when Baldwin, believing the gun to not be loaded with real bullets, pointed it at Hutchins and pulled the trigger.
Additionally, the armorer on the set was also charged with involuntary manslaughter, but reached a plea deal that reduced the charges to negligent use of a deadly weapon.
In California, manslaughter carries a potential prison sentence of up to four years. Prosecutors allege that Baldwin lied when questioned about his actions leading up to the shooting and that a forensic analysis of the gun confirmed this. Furthermore, there were previous complaints about the safety conditions on the set prior to the fatal accident.
It's moments like these where we must realize that no person is above the law. Whether it is Alec Baldwin or anybody else, nobody should be immune from recklessly handling a loaded firearm and killing another with it.
