Sexology is one branch, which you will not be able to practice effectively unless you are knowledgeable in all other branches.
Brain and nerves stimulate, heart and blood vessels circulate, hormones regulate, so any disruption anywhere can lead to sexual dysfunction.
I get a lot of VIP clients referred to me by other doctors for sexual difficulties. It’s quite surprising to see a lack of sexual knowledge even among the highly educated and well off people.
There are many couples who go through unconsummated marriages for years, just because they don’t have the right knowledge about sexual positions.
Many try to have sex by keeping their legs outside that of their partners, making sexual intercourse impossible. So in order to explain sexual positions in detail to my patients, I keep two dolls—male and female—at my clinic.
Indians desperately need sex education. The best way to do this is through television. We should run a programme on sex education, just like KBC (Kaun Banega Crorepati, the popular Hindi adaptation of television game-show ‘Who wants to be a millionaire? hosted by Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan).
If the speaker is good, the programme will be a hit. How you communicate the subject is the key. Fear that talking about sex will lead to controversy is misplaced. I have given lectures on sex where four generations were sitting together in one room.
One question I keep getting asked so often whenever I deliver a talk or lecture, either in India or abroad, is to name the celebrities who come to me for treatment.
The truth is I often fail to recognise celebrities, other than Bollywood stars. Most of the time, it’s only after they leave, I realise he/she was a star.
I am also required to keep a lot of things confidential, due to the nature of my work. But one thing I can tell you, the nights of many Indian celebrities are dependent on my days.
