Because of childhood trauma Joe develops borderline personality disorder, chronic obsession and also codependency. Yes, we do feel empathy for the character but we should take lessons from the series.
Just like Joe, many individuals go through abuse and trauma in their childhood, which leads them to develop personality disorder and they turn out to be psychopaths, narcissists and sociopaths, which leads them to inflict pain to themselves and even others, and sometimes they turn out to be hardcore murderers or criminals.
Although people have started having conversations regarding safe space, and mental health, and are trying becoming sensitive, there is still a long way for us to have acceptance, and normalizing seeking psychological treatment at very initial stages of the abuse.
Therapy is seen to be usually neglected by individuals, thus traumas and experiences shape individuals with vulnerabilities and personalities which we ourselves might dislike.
The series has done a fascinating job deconstructing how much mental health is connected to our romantic behavior. But whether we develop a compassion for handsome, seemingly picture-perfect men like Joe says a lot about our own biases and who we are more comfortable humanizing over others?
Share your views and opinions about Joe's character and the series. Let's talk more about our traumas, and seek therapy whenever necessary.
