Looks like India’s Para-athletes are finally getting what they deserve. The latest edition of Femina India featured shuttlers Suhas Yathiraj and Pramod Bhagat along with 20-year-old shooter Avani Lekhara and Paddler Bhavin Patel.
Femina India in a post in their Instagram page said, “They did their country proud at the #TokyoParalmpics. Not one to rest on their laurels, they are already gearing up for the 2024 Paris Paralympics. We present you the para-athletes who have overcome the toughest challenges to keep shining bright on our 62nd Anniversary cover.”
It is very important that more mainstream magazines and newspapers come forward and give para-athletes their due. More often than not Para-athletes are largely overlooked in our country which is very wrong and thankfully magazines like Femina are leading the change. Everyone knows that Neeraj Chopra won Gold at the Paralympics, but how many have heard of Devendra Jhajharia who has won gold twice at the F46 Javelin throw event? It is about time that we as a country start to recognize para-athletes in the mainstream media, who have been busy milking Cricket since donkeys’ years, but this has to change, if we, as a country are to produce more medallists in the Paralympic Games.
This is hopefully the start of an era in Indian Media, an era which finally recognizes para-athletes.
