Ur note is more surprising. I thought periods being a taboo was restricted to third world countries like ours and not US.
I just tweeted about menstruation, wanted to make the tweet more personal, even asked myself if it fits kashmiri sensibilities. I rewrote the tweet but then decided to write about menstruation. People might say have written about how COVID vaccine was affecting the cycles, but today however I want to normalise it for myself.
Many might find it hard to believe that talking about menstruation is still a big no no among families in India-even educated ones .A friend of mine, who has lived her life between Kashmir - Delhi and US was discussing whether she should discuss periods with her teenage son.
The question is why. Isn’t menstruation as normal a process of growing up in girls as getting a beard is for boys. While the beard doesn’t mean ur son is ready for marriage and have kids, same is true for your daughters -menstruation doesn’t make ur little girls women. They are still ur little girls who need ur support, confidence and care to accept this change in their bodies.
While atleast urban India has come a long way from ‘not touching the pickles and staying out of the kitchen” but girls still hesitate to ask their fathers to buy them sanitary pads with groceries. Even your neighbourhood grocery stores might pack pads separately wrapped in newspaper.
But good news is many parents and schools are driving the change.I remember a former colleague writing in Indian Express about students in co- Ed school contributing to buy sanitary pads as a part of their first aid kit. Another friend whose teenage daughter is training for professional tennis says, her husband is the one buying pads for her daughter during her tours.
On my part I and my teenage son have talked about periods as normal growing up process in girls and realised for kids his generation it is not even an issue to talk about. Only the parents need to grow.
P.S when u see me wearing nail paint just take it a sign that I am on my periods and stay away, my PMS is very bad and I snap.
