Muslim women have shared how they feel about the emergence of a horrifying new Github app - BulliBai. Similar to last year's SulliDeals, this app auctions off Muslim women to the highest bidder.
Almost a hundred Muslim women (along with their photographs) are listed on the app as 'your Bulli Bai of the day.' Both Bulli and Sulli are derogatory terms used by the right-wing for Muslim women.
“It is sad to see how these hate-mongers are licensed to target Muslim women without any fear,” said Ismat Ara, a journalist in New Delhi.
“The women who have been targeted are vocal women who raise issues of Muslims on social media. It is a clear conspiracy to shut these Muslim women because we challenge the Hindu right-wing online against their hate crimes."
Her sentiments were echoed by Kashmiri journalist Quratulain Rehbar, who described the experience of seeing herself for sale as "shocking and humiliating." She felt that the app was meant to "degrade and humiliate vocal Muslim women."
“This country keeps inflicting an endless cycle of trauma and violence,” tweeted Ayesha Minhaz on the issue.
There can be no doubt as to the motivation behind these attacks, as evidenced by the inclusion of veteran social activist Khalida Parveen on the app. She was listed for auction a mere few days after she campaigned for the arrest of hatemonger Yati Narsinghanand Saraswati, who had held the Haridwar conclave calling for genocide and violence against Muslims.
“Young women who are vocal have been registering their protest online. Now when they are targeted by ‘auctioning,’ their parents, husbands etc, out of humiliation and afraid of being targets, will prevent them from expressing their opinions. This is the consequence of the targeted harassment,” said Khalida.
Although FIRs have been registered in the case, and the Mumbai police say they now have a lead, a 21 year old engineering student in Bengaluru, it is safe to assume that he wasn't operating alone. For Muslim women, who are used to the larger context of misogyny intersecting with Islamophobia, it may be little comfort.
