Covid-19 had caused havoc in the red half of Manchester, resulting in the cancellation of two back to back matches for United. The Red Devils were finally back in action against Newcastle in the Premier League after 16 days of lay-off. It was a crucial tie, and 3 points was the need of the hour for both clubs.
Having missed two weeks of football, United looked dodgy and conceded an early goal to Saint-Maximin. Both Baily and Lindelof were unavailable for selection, so Ragnick had to rush Varane back into the squad, sooner than his liking. The Frenchman along with his compatriot Maguire were run ragged by the Newcatle forwards and were absolutely dreadful at the back.
Although the Reds were able to rescue a point, the same old problems seem to be creeping up at Old Trafford.
3) Midfield- Area of Concern.
The Midfield duo of Mac-Fred was abysmal yet again. They lacked creativity and were overpowered by the Magpies midfield. The pair could not string two passes and were left chasing shadows for the entirety of the first half. The whole footballing world is still wondering why a talent like Donny cannot get into the United squad. Mac-Fred has been shambles the whole season, yet they seem to be undroppable at United.
2) Unlucky Magpies.
On any other day, the Magpies would've won the match handsomely. Newcastle was by far the better team, and had United on the ropes for the whole 90 minutes. The Magpies hit the post once, and were twice denied by De Gea's outstanding reflexes. The match was a reflection of Newcastle's season. However, the major concern for the Magpies would be the injury to their talismanic pair of Saint-Maiximn and Wilson.
1) Players need shaking up.
Some players at United seem to have taken their position for granted, knowing that they are undroppable. Half of the United squad in yesterday's clash were just passengers. The whole United squad needs shaking up, and Ragnick needs to be more ruthless with his players. The German needs to be more authoritative, or else he will end up in a similar position like his predecessors.
