Punjab Congress President Navjot Singh Sidhu on Tuesday resigned from the party post.
In his resignation letter to Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Sidhu said that he will continue to serve the party.
"The collapse of a man's character stems from compromise corner. I can never compromise on Punjab's future and the agenda for the welfare of Punjab. Therefore, I hereby resign as the President of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee. Will continue to serve the Congress," he wrote.
Apparently, Sidhu is miffed with the Congress high command for denying him the Chief Minister's post after the resignation of Captain Amarinder Singh.
He was also unhappy with the appointment of some "tainted" leaders as ministers and the distribution of portfolios.
Ahead of the crucial assembly elections in February-March, the Congress has plunged into turmoil in Punjab.
This started a few months ago after Sidhu raised a banner of revolt against Captain Amarinder Singh who had strongly objected to Sidhu being named as the Punjab Congress President.
Despite reservations from several other quarters, including senior leaders, state ministers and office bearers, the Congress leadership handed over the reins of the Punjab unit to Sidhu.
Soon after, the Congress leadership forced Captain Amarinder Singh to resign, Sidhu was not considered for the post and instead named Dalit leader Charanjit Singh Sidhu as the next Chief Minister.
Apart from Sidhu, the names of Sunil Jakhar, Ambika Soni and Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa were also considered but the Congress high command preferred Channi over others.
Sidhu's resignation came amid rumours that Captain Amarinder Singh is going to meet Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP President JP Nadda.
However, both the BJP and the Captain Amarinder Singh camp denied any such meeting.
Captain Amarinder Singh's media advisor Raveen Thukral informed that his boss will be on a personal visit to Delhi and that no meetings have been scheduled.
It remains to be seen if the Congress high command will accept Sidhu's resignation and appoint a new person on the post.
In the past too, many state unit presidents had offered their resignations but were asked by the Congress leadership to continue on their posts.
