Very nice. 👏
Good piece.
Ever wondered how siblings born to the same parents and grew up in the same house behave differently? I do. My brother and I are stark opposites-irony of genes?
Korean film Move the Grave which I watched at the Biffes is a noisy, live show of this context in a car. Four sisters with contrasting characters and living conditions travel together for a cause. Their spats continue across the journey. Elder one Hye-yeong (Jang Liu)’s troublesome son Dongmin steals the show with his cute tantrums. Dongmin is a smart, curious kid who finds solutions for himself in boring situations. From the first scene where he questions his class teacher to the end, Master Kang Minijun was a delight.
So, the sisters are united for moving the grave of their father due to construction on the land and to divide the compensation. In matters of money, people reflect themselves effortlessly making the judgments bit easier. Single parent Hye-yeong is on the verge of losing her job. Geum-ok (Lee Seon-hee), a bubbly sister is facing marital issues. Hye-yeon, the youngest college student is a loud feminist. Geum Hee (Gong Min Jung) really bothers about money, especially with a fiancée who doesn’t even spare the expense of toothpaste from their future accounts. The to-be couple’s video call was awful.
In the quest for their estranged brother Seung (Kwak Min Gyu), the sisters get another trophy on the way -his negotiating girlfriend. She leads them to his hideout and demands money for her unplanned pregnancy and the emotional damage caused by him. Completed family and their chaos are more vibrant at his place.
Their mute uncle and wife (too agile in households) represent the older generation in MTG. A country chicken dinner at their house was quite revealing for the entire family. What’s special about a penis- was the provoking question Hye-yeon threw to her patriarchal uncle.
Jeong Seung Oh’s debut feature MTG smoothly retains the audience with its entertaining, floating nature of siblings’ spats, reunion, and mutual support in demanding scenarios as it ought to be in every family.
