During the age of the Italian Renaissance, Florence became the centre of art, this created an opportunity for Michelangelo to show his inner talent and develop him. His mother died when he was only 6, at first his father didn't approve of his interest in art as a career.
Michelangelo was 13 when he started to apprentice under the painter Domenico Ghirlandaio. He was particularly known for his murals. After only a year, his talent drew the attention of Florence’s leading art patron, Lorenzo de’ Medici. He extended an invitation to Michelangelo to reside in a room of his palatial home.
His work is marked with a fusion of psychological insight, physical realism and intensity never before seen. The contemporary artists of his time recognised his talent and mastery.
