Iran inflicted a crushing defeat on Wales in their second match of the FIFA World Cup 2022 at the Ahmed Bin Ali stadium. The Carlos Quieroz's side pulled of an extraordinary victory in the most most unexpected manner. The Ehsan Hajsafi lead side bagged three highly crucial points as they registered their first win of the World Cup campaign. Wales on the other hand were handed an unthinkable defeat despite being backed by majority to win the encounter against Iran. The Gareth Bale lead team is now at the bottom of its group with just 1 point in two games along with a goal difference of -2.
Iran started on the frontfoot as they threatened the opponent with the ball in their possession early on in the game. The team had the ball into the back of the net, only to see their goal being chopped off due to offside. Gholizadeh who was passes the ball by Azmoun was clearly in an office position prior to the moment when he scored. Apart from this there wasn't anything significant which occurred in the first half. Neither of the sides managed to find their rhythm as the scores remained 0-0 at half time.
The real action began early on in the second half as Iran came within touching distances of opening the scoring. Sardar Azmoun at first burst down the right channel and smashed the right post with his powerful shot. The ball then fell into the path of Gholizadeh who saw his shot come off the left post. A big moment in the game came in the 86th minute when Wales' shotstopper - Wayne Hennessey advanced down the pitch and brought Mehi Taremi down just outside the box.
Β A VAR check confirmed the crime to be a major one which resulted in Hennessey being sent off with a straight red. This was followed by an unthinkable finsoh to the game by Iran as Rouzbeh Cheshmi scored a screamer in the 98th minute to give Iran the lead. Just three minutes later, Ramin Rezaeian scored after Iran caught Wales in the counter. FT:- Wales 0-2 Iran.
