Uruguay played a highly intense draw in their opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2022 against South Korea at the Education City Stadium. Diego Alonso's men enjoyed more posession and arguably had better chances to bag three points in their highly crucial opening match. The South Korean side meanwhile managed to bag a seemingly important point after having narrowly escaped a defeat in the hands of their opponents. The game had several significant moments which lead to the result.
South Korea started strongly as they looked more comfortable and retained the posession of the ball more than what Uruguay did early on in the game. It were the South Koreans who has the first major opportunity to open the scoring at the half an hour mark. UI Jo Hwang who was unmarked in the box found the a good ball and some space to shoot. He however could only send a clumsy shot over the crossbar. Uruguay arguably had the best possible chance to take the lead inside the first half when Diego Godin managed to rise the highest and meet Valverde's corner kick. The defender's header however smashed the woodwork as the scores remained 0-0 at half time.
The second half saw some clumsy display from both the ends as neither of the sides managed to find their moments and create chances into the opposition's half of play. Each of the two sides made use of their substitutions thereby making their intentions of trying to strengthen their grip over the game clear. Uruguay came massively close to taking the lead in the 90th minute as woodwork came to South Korea's rescue for a second time in the game. Fede Valverde's wonder strike from long range crashed into the left post. The game eventually ended in a goalless draw. FT:- Uruguay 0-0 South Korea.
