Switzerland registered a comfortable win over Cameroon in their opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2022 at the Al Janoub Stadium. Murat Yakin's men displayed some excellent quality of football to choke the opposition and bagged three crucial points in their opening game. Despite the match being a closely contested one with both the sides sharing almost equal posession of the ball, it was the Swiss team that emerged victorious. Cameroon on the other hand were handed a tough defeat. The side squandered some major opportunities which lead to its loss even though they had more shots on target.
Cameroon showed great determination towards the earlier phases of the game as they close pretty close to opening the scoring in the 10th minute. Mbuemo managed to find his way down into the left hand side of the box and went for goal himself only to see his shot saved brilliantly, with Toko Ekambi smashing the rebound over the crossbar. Cameroon threatened with the ball in their posession once again at the hour mark as a smart one-two with Mbuemo and Choupo-Moting. This was followed by Hongla finding a fine pass and some brilliant space to shoot from inside the box. The midfielder went for goal only to see his effort saved by Sommer fantastically. Switzerland had their first big chance of the game as Akanji managed to rise high enough to meet Vargas' corner with his head. The Manchester City man however could only head the ball narrowly wide of the goal.
Switzerland took the lead just 3 minutes after the start of the second half. Granit Xhaka laid down a fine pass in the right for Shaqiri who in turn cut in a fine cross into the box. Embolo who was totally unmarked steered the ball into the back of the net past Onana from 6 yards to make it 1-0. Switzerland almost doubled their advantage at the 70 minute mark when an unmarked Vargas in the middle of the box saw his powerful shot pushed wider by Onana. FT:- Switzerland 1-0 Cameroon.
