Spain inflicted a crushing defeat on Costa Rica in their opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2022 at the Al Thumama stadium. Luis Enrique's men ran riot against a clueless Costa Rica side as they put 7 past their opposition to register a huge win to start their World Cup campaign in style. Fernando Suarez's men on the other hand seemed absolutely helpless throughout the game as they were totally outplayed for major part of their time on the pitch. The side will now find it tough to initiate a turnaround hereon and make it beyond the Group stages.
It took just 11 minutes for Spain to take the lead. Regular attempts to attack the goal right from the first minute paid off at last for the Spanish side as a fine chipped ball from gavi was deflected and fell into the path of Dani olmo, who in turn steered it past Navas with ease. Spain doubled their advantage just 10 minutes later as a low cross from Jordi Alba found Marco Assensio after slicing through the Costa Rica defense as the no.10 easily struck it past the Goalkeeper into the goal. Spain scored their third at the half an hour mark after they were awarded the spot kick as Duarte fouled Jordi Alba in the box. Ferran Torres scored from the spot to make it 3-0.
Ferran Torres scored his second to mark the beginning the Spanish dominance in the second half too. Some aweful defending at the back saw Ferran Torres find some space through towards goal, as the striker made no mistake. It was in the 74th minute that Spain had a wonderful moment as Pablo Gavi found his side's fifth goal. The 18 year old became his team's youngest goalacorer at the World Cups. Carlos Soler coolly slotted in a sixth goal for Spain in the 90th minute as Navas failed to clear the ball away. Morata scored the seventh and final goal of the match in the stoppage time to wrap up the game and three points for his side. FT:- Spain 7-0 Costa Rica.
