Life beyond death - Father running free boxing coaching centre in Patiala in memory of son for the last 11 years.
Junior national boxing medallist Bipran Beer Singh migrated to Australia for a greener pasture. But life had something different to offer. On May 28, 2010, Bipran, just 22, lost his life in a road accident.
It’s been over 11 years, since Bipran left for his heavenly abode, but he is continuously serving as a navigator for the kids, mostly coming from a humble background, to excel in boxing.
The kids from his native village Hasanpur Purohita and surrounding areas are honing their skills at the Bipran Beer Singh Boxing and Training Centre. The centre has produced two international and over a dozen national-level boxers and the count is still on.
To keep Bipran’s memory alive, his father Surjit Singh along with boxing lovers started a free coaching centre in the village.
“On the day of Bipran’s bhog, we all decided to start a boxing centre in the village. And within a week we laid the foundation stone of the centre. This was the only way I could give tribute to my son and keep his memories alive forever,” says Surjit Singh, who is also the current Sarpanch of the village. From day one, the centre is imparting free coaching and even provides free equipment to all the trainees.
Sarbat Da Bhala Charitable trust president SP Singh Oberoi had donated a boxing ring, Bipran’s family takes care of the coach’s salary and the equipment has been provided through the family’s contact.
Bipran’s coach Harpreet Singh, who retired from the Punjab Sports Department last year, has been monitoring the centre since its inspection.
“Within two years of opening of the centre, two girls from the Hasanpur Purohita village made it to the Indian team in the age group categories. The trainees from the centre are regularly representing Punjab in the nationals and there is hardly any Punjab team that doesn’t have representation from the Bipran Beer Singh Boxing and Training Centre,” says Harpreet Singh. “In the coming years you will see more international boxers coming from the centre.”
