Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not spoken yet on the Lakhimpur Kheri incident in Uttar Pradesh where eight people were killed in violence on Sunday.
The Prime Minister needs to break his silence and walk the talk by sternly asking Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to take strict action against the culprits.
The incident occured just before Uttar Pradesh deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya was to inaugurate an annual wrestling competition, which is organised by Kheri MP and Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Kumar Mishra Teni in memory of his father late Ambika Prasad Mishra at Banbirpur village.
According to locals, the Union minister's son Ashish Mishra, ran his car over the farmers protesting over the Centre's three farm laws.
The opposition parties have upped the ante against the BJP government in Utter Pradesh.
"How much does BJP hate the farmers of the country? Don't they have a right to live? If they raise their voice, will you shoot them, will you crush them with your car? Enough. This is a country of farmers, not a fiefdom of BJP's brutal ideology. Kisan Satyagraha will be strengthened and the voice of the farmer will be louder," Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra tweeted as she headed to Lakhimpur Kheri.
Congress MP Deepender Hooda and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, who has been appointed as the Congress's senior observer for the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, are also visiting the place.
Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Akhilesh Yadav condemned the incident. “It is a very inhuman and cruel act by the Minister of State for Home to trample the peaceful farmers who were opposing the farm laws," he tweeted.
"I strongly condemn the barbaric incident in Lakhimpur Kheri. The apathy of BJP4India towards our farmer brethren pains me deeply. A delegation of 5 AITCofficial MPs will be visiting the families of the victims tomorrow. Our farmers will always have our unconditional support," tweeted West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee.
Chief Minister Yogi said the Uttar Pradesh government will investigate the matter in detail and will take strict actions against the culprits.
