It happenes for the first time --- Day 1, India in Olympics' medal tally , thanks to Mirabai
It's for the first time in India's Olympic history that the country finds a place in the medal tally on the day one of the competition.
The opening ceremony of the games was held on July 23 and July 24 is considered as the first day of the competition where a medal is at stake.
All thanks to weightlifter Mirabai Chanu's silver medal winning feat that India got a place in the medal tally on the very first day.
India won its first Olympic medal in 1928 Olympics in hockey and the first individual medal came in 1952 Olympics --- KD Jadhav won bronze in wrestling.
Till date India has won 15 individual medals, including Mirabai's silver, in the Olympics, but it’s for the first time that the country has won a medal on the opening day of the competitions.
Note” Norman Gilbert Pritchard was the first Asian-born athlete to win an Olympic medal when he won two silver medals in athletics at the 1900 Paris Olympics. He represented the British-India, but at that time his entry was not sent officially by any Indian sports body or sports committee.
