Former Punjab Chief Minister and veteran Congress leader Captain Amarinder Singh is likely to meet Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP President JP Nadda in Delhi today.
There is much speculation that Captain Amarinder Singh, 80, may join the BJP days after the Congress removed him as the Punjab Chief Minister and appointed Dalit leader Charanjit Singh Channi in his place.
After resigning from the post, Captain Amarinder Singh had stated that he felt hurt and humiliated the way he was asked by the Congress high command to put in his papers barely some months ahead of the assembly elections.
Punjab along with Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur will go to polls in February-March next year.
The veteran leader served as the Congress Chief Minister for five-and-a-half years.
At the time of his resignation, the senior Congress leader had said that he will soon take a call on his future course of action and that all options are open for him.
He was also critical of Punjab Congress President Navjot Singh Sidhu, who was instrumental in his exit, and insisted that he would oppose tooth and nail any move to name him the next Chief Minister of Punjab.
Captain Amarinder Singh had also claimed that Sidhu would be a security threat to a border state like Punjab given his relations with the Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and Army Chief Qamar Javed Bajwa.
He also claimed that the Congress party would not even win seats in double digits if it decides to fight upcoming elections under Sidhu's leadership.
The Congress leadership in a surprise move named Channi as the Punjab Chief Minister, a move that silenced all the critics.
According to Zee News, Captain Amarinder Singh may be inducted into Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Cabinet as the Union Agriculture Minister.
However, there is an age bar of 75 years for the BJP leaders to hold any government or party post.
In that case, he might be appointed Governor in some state.
But a clear picture would emerge only after his meetings with the BJP leadership given that there is a visible anger against the ruling party in Punjab
