Great news 👏👏
It was a day of mixed results for the Indians at the 2021 Indonesia Masters. PV Sindhu qualified for the Quarters after beating Clara Azurmendi. Lakshya Sen’s impressive run ended against Japan's top seed Kento Momota. It’s been disappointing for both the women’s teams and mixed double’s team of Ashwini Ponappa and Sikki Reddy as they lost to a Thai pair, Sikki Reddy also lost her mixed double’s match as well along with Dhruv Kapila. All was not bleak however, as HS Prannoy pulled out the performance of his life to beat Olympic Gold medalist Viktor Axelson Kidambi Srikanth won as well in an enthralling match against Jonathan Christi.
Both Srikanth and Sindhu pulled off similar come-from-behind victories against their opponents much like HS Prannoy did against Axelson. Down and out in the first game, Prannoy made a sensational recovery to first level the match and then eke out a memorable win against the world no 2. This was Prannoy's first victory in six attempts against Axelsen. With the win, the world no 32 Indian shuttler became the first player to beat the Dane in a full match since March.
In the women's singles, reigning world champion Sindhu, who is seeded third, took 47 minutes to record a 17-21 21-7 21-12 win over Spain's Clara Azurmendi. Playing against the world no 47 Azurmendi for the first time, Sindhu went down in the first game before putting up a dominant performance in the next two games to register a brilliant victory.
Sindhu’s next opponent is going to be Turk Neslihan Yigit, who is the 30th seed in the tournament. Srikanth and Prannoy on the other hand are set to face each other in order to book a berth to the semis.
