Indigenous sport mallakhamb's 20-year-old star Himani Parab nominated for Arjuna award
India’s top mallakhamb player Himani Parab’s name is recommended along with the 35 sporting stars for the country’s prestigious sporting honour Arjuna award.
Himani, who hails from Mumbai, is a multiple medallist of the inaugural world mallakhamb championship held in Mumbai in 2019.
She had also won Maharashtra’s highest sports award, Shree Shiv Chattrapati Award, in 2018-19.
She was also part of the Indian squad that demonstrated the traditional Indian sport during the Tokyo Olympics.
The national sports award committee has recommended the names in all the sports awards category and now the recommended list will be sent to the union sports minister for the final approval.
As per the past practice, the minister approves the recommended list.
After getting the recommendation approved, Himani will be the first sportsperson to be conferred with the Arjuna award in the indigenous sport – Mallakhamb.
Last year, Mallakhamb coach Yogesh Malviya was awarded with the country’s highest award for coaches, Dronacharya award. He was the first coach to be conferred with the prestigious coaching award.
Mallakhamb is an indigenous sport, originating from India, mainly Maharashtra, in which a gymnast performs aerial yoga or gymnastics postures and wrestling grips in concert with a vertical stationary or hanging wooden pole, cane, or rope. The word Mallakhamb also refers to the pole used in the sport.
