As the global pandemic continues to strain marital life and relationships, India’s first board certified (US) female sexologist Dr Sharmila Majumdar is working hard to save as many as she can. In a career spanning over 15 years, Dr Majumdar has helped over 16,000 patients—from 21-year-old HIV patient experiencing acute depression to 79-year old heart patient, struggling from erectile dysfunction—to lead a fulfilling life. She currently lives in Hyderabad with her husband Padmanava Debnath and eight-year-old daughter Arya. Here is what she has to say about life and sex in the time of coronavirus.
How has Covid-19 changed our sex lives?
There is a lot of anxiety around having sex these days, even among couples who are in a steady relationship. People want to know how to have safe sex; whether the virus will get transmitted via coitus (the research is still preliminary) ; what are some of the hygiene practices that needs to be adopted etc. It’s a common concern among most of my patients, if not all. For others locked down has killed libido, thanks to over familiarity with their partners.
Do you think the desire to know more about safe sex practices will usher in greater sexual openness among people?
People, were already becoming less inhibited about sexual problems even before the pandemic. For millennials, sex is no longer a taboo. The pandemic is likely to accelerate the trend.
Dr Sharmila Majumdar is the India head of American Association of Sexuality Educators and Therapists. She is also the founding member of VVox, a digital therapy platform led by a team of globally renowned sexual health experts from India, US and Singapore to address sexual distress.
