House Speaker Kevin McCarthy recently flexed his political muscles by refusing to reappoint Eric Swalwell and Adam Schiff, two Democrats known for their divisive rhetoric and manipulation of facts, to the Committee on Intelligence.
This decision was a clear demonstration of the determination of McCarthy and his Republican colleagues to hold accountable those who spread deceit and sow division in Congress and among the American public.
The reasons for these decisions were clear. For Swalwell, it was his past relationship with his ex-lover, a Chinese spy, Fang Fang, which, of course, raises serious national security concerns. For Schiff, it was the fact that he is a habitual liar and that he continues to lie even in the face of facts. This behavior was shown most clearly during his constant claims that President Trump colluded with Russia, despite the complete lack of evidence to support those claims.
I don’t necessarily support Republicans and Democrats engaging in a perpetual tit-for-tat, that harms America. But in this case, McCarthy’s actions are far more based on rational decision making than on retribution.
