Re-writing history is an important Chinese Communist Party project. Leaders like Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping played a significant role in stamping their authority on how the history of the party, its policies, and the country are handled. Now, Xi Jinping will do the same and join the other two stalwarts of Chinese history.
The Communist party's highest decision-making body next month will review a resolution on the party's 100-year history talking about its "major achievements and historical experiences". Xi's tenure will be written about glowingly. (https://www.globaltimes.cn/page/202110/1236614.shtml)
The Central Committee Political Bureau has drafted the resolution and it will be deliberated in the plenary session next month. Such an exercise has happened only twice before, under Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping. Experts say that while Xi has history on his mind, he also wants to talk about his vision for the future, and it is likely to sail through in the party's session next month.
The draft also talks about a "declaration to the world." This could assert China's role as a world leader and as a stabilising power that will not bow before any country.
Politburo has praised Xi for taking China onto a new "historical course" to lead to more progress. Xi is also likely to emphasise on 'common prosperity and the need for a more equitable society.
As opposed to his predecessor, who had set only two terms for a president, Xi secured a third term in 2018 by changing the party constitution. (https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-43361276)
China's aggressive move towards Taiwan, and Xi's assertion of "the historical task of complete reunification of the motherland" is likely to be another point that will be emphasised as one of the central points of his leadership. With no challenger in sight, Xi is likely to use the party's most powerful body to toe the line that he wants rather than the other way round.
