Fundamentally, "online dating" isn't something we only started doing a few years ago—not even five, ten, or twenty. Personal advertising existed before the Internet, and before that, lone shepherds etched intricate works of art into tree bark to express their yearning for human interaction.
A research or opinion piece attempting to explain why online dating is a billion dollar industry is published almost every week.
Online dating has changed from a last-ditch effort for the desperate to a genuine contender in the hunt for love in a relatively short period of time. Nearly everyone can think of a couple that met online or through an app. Swipes have taken the place of Cupid.
However, despite how totally contemporary this approach may appear, its origins go back many years. Matchmaking services like Match and eHarmony weren't the first in history, nor were they the first technology-based dating sites. We have always looked for novel approaches to sex, romance, and relationship. The most recent iteration of it is digital dating.
