Introduction
The Concept of an Indian Identity and Mindset continues...
An accurate history, of course, should not only record the periods of glory but the moments of degeneration, of the missed opportunities, and of the failure to forge national unity at crucial junctures in time when it was required to confront and defeat foreign aggressors. It should draw lessons for the future generations from costly disunity errors in the past, for example when Baji Rao and Nizam-ul-Mulk failed to join forces to defeat Nadir Shah in 1739. Similarly, Madhav Rao (Scindhia) and Haider Ali together could have crushed the corrupt East India Company, but Mahadaji Scindhia failed to help Tipu Sultan against Cornwallis. Thereby India was thoroughly defeated and conquered. The same Cornwallis who miserably failed in the American War of Independence in the eighteenth century was able to subdue the much larger population of India because of our inability to close ranks against the foreigner. Thus, it was not the much portrayed Hindu “submission” that was responsible for our subjugation but lack of unity and effective military strategy in a time of decadence and moral decay that had weakened our national resolve.
Therefore, without such an accurate de-falsified history, India cannot develop the correct identity.
The correct perception of Indian identity, briefly stated, is that we are a people who have always constituted a nation, living in a geographical location, spanning from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, from Attak to Car Nicobar, bound together in a continuing civilization of more than 10,000 years, a people who are mostly of Hindu religious faith and of those others of separate, equally respected faiths but whose ancestors are Hindu. There are still others, such as Parsis and Jews, who came as refugees and accepted the culture of Hindus while retaining their religion. They have lived without persecution and never felt the need to demand reservations and quotas for themselves. That is how the Indian evolved. Those who acknowledge this legacy are modern Indians or Hindustani.
