The pressure is showing on Belarus. After allegedly pushing migrants to the Poland border in a forest, a camp on the side of Belarus has been emptied. The migrants trying to enter Poland have been moved to a warehouse not very far from the place of stand-off. (https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-59341765)
Poland and the European Union have been accusing Belarus president Alexander Lukashenko of provoking a new deliberate refugee crisis on the border. According to reports, over 2000 immigrants living in Belarus have been amassed at the border, mostly from the Middle East. The EU countries have accused Lukashenko of seeking "revenge" after the EU imposed sanctions after a plane forced to land in the Belarusian capital Minsk and a Belarus dissident travelling on the flight was arrested in May.
Belarus made its decision after violence erupted between the migrants and the Polish border guards.
Europe recently announced a slew of measures against Belarus for using migrants for "political purposes" and resorting to "hybrid attacks." The new sanctions when they come into force would mean that participants in bringing the people to the border will face their assets frozen and there will also be travel ban. The European Council has said that individuals and entities could include "people, airlines, travel agencies and everyone involved in this illegal push of migrants" against the borders. The sanctions will come into effect as the EU recognizes the people and then announces actions. Some have speculated that many airlines within Belarus may not fly out of the country if the sanctions kick in.
What may have titled the scales also was hectic diplomatic activity. Besides asking Russian President Vladimir Putin to influence Belarus, Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke with Lukashenko twice, persuading him to step back. It may be yielding results already.
